There's little point detailing the inestimable legacy of Disney's incredible 1994 animated classic, which is without question one of the most iconic and beloved animated films of all time, spawning an enterprise of spin-off projects including a highly successful Broadway musical.

After last year's CGI live-action remake of The Jungle Book was a colossal box office success, it was just a matter of time before Disney pressed ahead with remakes of their other popular properties, and The Lion King was soon announced with The Jungle Book's director, Jon Favreau, taking the helm.

In addition, the cast includes Donald Glover (Simba), a returning James Earl Jones (Mufasa), Billy Eichner (Timon), Seth Rogen (Pumbaa), John Oliver (Zazu), Alfre Woodward (Sarabi) and John Kani (Rafiki), while Beyonce is rumoured to be playing Nala and also contributing to the movie's music.

It would be silly to bet against Favreau at this point, and while it may not capture the same cultural zeitgeist as the source material, at its worst it'll likely be an entertainingly nostalgic romp with jaw-dropping visuals.

Which upcoming movie remakes are you most optimistic about? Shout them out in the comments!
