Let's face it, The Simpsons has had a damn good run, and there's no show on Earth which could run for 26 seasons without significantly dipping in quality. Still, it's now a sad fact that there are more post-decline episodes of The Simpsons in existence than sure-fire classics, with most Simpsons fans agreeing that the show began to dip at around the ninth or tenth season. While the show began with character-driven stories that were relatively rooted in reality, The Simpsons has become increasingly surreal and outlandish over the decades, likely in an attempt to compete with its far more flamboyant rival, Family Guy. Though the show regularly pulled in 20-30 million viewers for its first four seasons, it's been on a steady decline ever since, with figures for the 25th season sitting largely between 3-6 million viewers. However, this is still successful enough that The Simpsons hasn't been cancelled, even if its diminished returns did result in pay cuts for the principal cast in 2011. The lucrative nature of syndication combined with the fact that it still has a loyal core audience who will tune in every Sunday night for a bit of "easy viewing" ensures that the show will likely keep chugging along until either Dan Castellaneta dies or even the most loyal fans finally give up on it. Its glory days are over. Best put the old dog out to pasture and give it one final, dignified send off with a movie finale. Which TV shows do you desperately want to see come to an end?
