15 Announced Movies That Are Destined For Development Hell
11. Top Gun 2
Status So Far: A sequel to the 1986 cheese classic started to be talked up in 2010, and by 2012, director Tony Scott and Tom Cruise were scouting locations, while the script was said to be nearly finished. Scott's suicide threw a spanner in the works, though producer Jerry Bruckheimer remains committed to getting it made, with both Cruise and Val Kilmer returning, while as of last year, the script was being reworked. Why It's Destined For Development Hell: Because how many movie sequels get made thirty years after the fact? It happens, but not often, and though Top Gun is popular as a cornball relic of the 80s, nailing the right tone will be extremely challenging: it can't be too self-aware or tongue-in-cheek, as the beauty of the original is its utter lack of self-awareness. Then there's the whole mess with finding a new director, not to mention Tom Cruise's busy schedule, and the fact that nailing down a decent plot won't be easy given the relatively minimalist premise.
