Some horror films end up being underrated by critics since they have a heavy focus on violence and are dismissed as unpleasant and gratuitous. It's arguable that this is what happened with Hostel Part II.

Hostel Part II is a very nasty horror film that many will understandably find a bit much, but it still gets quite a lot right and this shouldn't have been ignored.

Being the well-acted, nightmarish, haunting and surprisingly smart film that it is, Hostel Part II is one of the most pleasantly-surprising horror sequels of recent times. The violent scenes are undeniably unpleasant, but there's more going on beneath the surface here and unlike its predecessor, Part II does actually manage to make you think.

Speaking of its predecessor, the main thing which makes this lower score so irritating is that Hostel got more generous scores (61% on RT and 55 on Metacritic) despite being far worse than its follow-up, which managed to improve on nearly all of the flaws of the original. This just wasn't fair.
