Why Watch It?

Under The Shadow is just one of the plus 90% horror movies on Rotten Tomatoes already this year, and it absolutely deserves its high billing. It is smartly made, wonderfully intoxicating and a stunning achievement for a first time director.

The best thing about the film is that it operates on a number of different levels that mark it out as more than a horror film without compromising on the things that make it a great horror movie. There are some great jump scares, which are entirely earned, there's a hell of a tense atmosphere - in part thanks to the war-torn back-drop - and there's a faint nostalgic element to the central relationship that draws on classics of the genre.

But beyond that it's a study in feminism, in familial unity and in mental health and it is the perfect answer to anyone who believes that horrors have to either be about expensive monsters or as much gross-out silliness as possible.
