2. Toy Story 3 - The Fire Pit
Toy Story 3 was a heartbreaking movie, one perfectly paced and one which made for an ideal send off to a childhood favourite. Was that undercut by Toy Story 4? Possibly, but that doesn’t change how much we all welled up at this moment.
For one agonising moment, it really felt like they were actually going to kill the gang off. There can be a cynical feeling with sequels to the films we loved as children, but Toy Story 3 earned its place in our hearts.
What is often forgotten with all the talk of the emotional impact though is how well shot the moment is.
As Woody, Buzz and the rest scramble away from the molten pit, the orange glow which illuminates them has a sickly beauty to it. Pixar revolutionised animation back with the first Toy Story, and the fruits of those labours were evidenced with Toy Story 3.
Every little detail of the shot, from the glow to their desperate eyes to the characters huddled together in hope, was brilliantly designed. It’s unlucky to miss out on the top spot, and is edged by this decade’s crowning achievement in animation.
