Luc Besson's ambitious, $200+ million sci-fi romp may have been a commercial failure and received mixed reviews, but it opened in undeniably alluring style with a terrific montage depicting the International Space Station as it flourishes over the centuries.

The sequence, set to David Bowie's iconic "Space Oddity", begins in 2020 as the Americans welcome Chinese astronauts aboard the station, and over the years the station invites various countries from around the world to join the adventure.

By 2150, alien species have made contact with the station, with a diverse series of alien creatures shown to arrive and shake hands with whatever human leader is onboard at the time.

With stunning visuals, a killer soundtrack and a refreshing optimism about the future of humanity and space travel, it's a superbly-executed sequence, even if it also means the film peaked within its first five minutes.
