15 Best Hidden Gem Movies Of 2018
10. Cam
On paper, Cam sounds like it would be right at home in a good Black Mirror season. Madeline Brewer's Alice is a cam-girl trying to climb the online rankings when she realises that someone else - someone who looks just like her - has hacked her profile and started to perform increasingly daring shows.
It's a pretty thrilling set-up, tapping into the anxiety that comes with putting the most vulnerable parts of your life on an even more vulnerable online infrastructure, but it's the stance that Cam takes on representing sex-work in general that makes it so engaging.
In any other film, it would be the very act of presenting yourself on a site like this that's the problem, and the hero would learn from her mistakes and go back to a regular old job, find another 'respected' outlet to contain her femininity and put all this nonsense behind her. Not in Cam.
Here it's all about strong characters taking control of that culturally-contentious part of their lives, enforcing their own autonomy and agency over whatever they want to do with their own bodies in a positive, liberating way that isn't purely for the consumption of others.
Also, someone having their identity stolen and watching their doppelganger shoot themselves on a livestream is just s**t scary.
