15 Best Hidden Gem Movies Of 2018

11. Unsane

Shot entirely on an iPhone for seemingly no other reason than to show off, Steven Soderbergh's Unsane never quite lives up to its lofty premise. That's only because said premise is so great though: a woman (played by the breakout star of 2018, Claire Foy), suffering severe PTSD after a stalker made her life hell, accidentally checks herself into a 24-hour stay at a behavioural centre, which turns into a seven-day stint. Even worse, her Stalker might be working in the very same facility she's now trapped in.

The way the film plays with both the character and the audience's understanding of reality is at times horrifying, making you feel just as powerless as the patients trapped inside these inescapable walls with their worst nightmares playing out in real time.

The divisive part comes as the movie moves towards its climax, which trades in the taught psychological trappings for straight-up slasher vibes, and while that may put some people off who wanted a more ambiguous ending, in hindsight that jump into B-movie shlock was always inevitable. The fact that this movie ends of a freeze-frame should tell you everything you need to know.
