The trippiest movie in the Marvel Comics Universe to date, Doctor Strange hit cinemas this winter to a storm of rave reviews. Starring Benedict Cumberbatch as the titular doctor, the film focuses on his transformation from neurosurgeon to time-bending superhero while under the tutelage of age-old sorcerer the Ancient One, played by Tilda Swinton.

The movie’s most moving scene takes place in a visually blistering second act fight between the Ancient One and her former pupil turned enemy Kaecilius, who kicks her through a portal into the real world where she falls hundreds of feet before crashing down onto the streets of New York City. Despite Doctor Strange’s best efforts to save her via conventional medicine, his mentor dies but not before appearing to him in astral form to deliver a touching monologue in which she tells him ‘Death is what gives life meaning. To know your days are numbered and your time is short. You'd think after all this time I'd be ready. But look at me. Stretching one moment out into a thousand... just so that I can watch the snow.’ I’m not crying, you are.
