14. Elizabeth Olsen - Wanda Maximoff
While the origin story is popular in comic book movies, the growth of superhero characters tends not to go too far beyond learning to properly harness your powers and overcoming a personal tragedy. After that, you’re cooking.
As Wanda Maximoff, Elizabeth Olsen has been given significantly more to do, advancing her character a great deal over the course of five films. In her first couple of appearances, she’s a frightened young woman in possession of abilities she can’t understand or control, but as time goes on, Olsen progresses the character to a full fledged Avenger and an enormously powerful hero.
Maximoff is substantially different to the comics in her film appearances, with more mutant-like powers than the comics’ magic. This allows Olsen to put a spin on the character which is totally her own. Credit must be given to Olsen for taking the character from something close to an X Men composite to her own creation.
It’s exciting to see that the character continues to grow, with a Maximoff-starring series coming to Disney+ in due course. Early reports suggest that the show will in part take the structure of a classic sitcom - which, frankly, sounds great.
