15 Best Romantic Films On Netflix Right Now
6. Her
Another entry on this list that won't necessarily be to everyone's tastes, but will be right up the alley of those who love films that dare to take risks. Joaquin Phoenix gives an Oscar worthy performance as lonely Theodore Twombly, who takes the notion of internet dating to new extremes when he falls in love with an Artifical Intelligence named 'Samantha'. The two develop an online sexual relationship, with its parallel to the real world climate proving particularly poignant.
In weaker hands the movie could have gone down the lame path that the likes of the mediocre 80's film Electric Dreams took, but in the hands of Director Spike Jonze and the superb Phoenix, the film doesn't put a step wrong. Phoenix spends much of the film acting to himself, but brings a believability to the romance, embracing Theodore's awkwardness and joy at falling in love. Kudos must also go to Scarlet Johansson, who displays no inhibitions in her voice work, as her character 'Samantha' grows before us.
Like many online relationships, the finale ends on a bit of a downer, the relationship never able to become what Theodore desperately desires. Jonze does a great job exploring the awkward imbalance between unrequited love and genuine romance that are common traits of online relationships. With everyone around the globe trapped inside and so many lonely souls looking for love where they can, this film couldn't be more resonant.
