As Good As It Gets Jack Nicholson
Gracie Films

The most unlikely of love stories presented here also happens to be one of the better Romance films of the 90's. Jack Nicholson stars as obsessive compulsive and sociopath Melvin, who if not for being a world famous writer, would have nothing going for him. Hurling insults at the very few people he is forced to associate with, Melvin finally makes the choice to enter the real world when he does something against his better judgment- he actually does good things for people.

Nicholson is absolutely on form as the repulsive Marvin, his homophobic, sexist and unthoughtful comments finally challenged by two unlikely influences. The first is his neighbour Simon, a gay artist played with a tender vulnerability by Greg Kinnear, his sensitive demeanour eventually goading Melvin to mind his pet dog as he recovers from a brutal assault. The second is Melvin's favourite waitress, Carol, who ends up dating him after the usually selfish man pays for Carol's terminally ill child's medical bills.

Helen Hunt brings a down to earth, take no nonsense nature to Carol that makes her the perfect character to challenge Melvin, and therefore becomes a perfect fit. There is a real sense of two lost souls finally finding a companion to settle down with in spite of the pairing's significant flaws. The comedy may not have aged all that well, but in terms of the romantic aspects, well, the title of the film says it all.
