15 Best Superhero Movie Costumes Ever

1. Superman (Superman)

Superman Christopher Reeve
Warner Bros.

It'd be incredibly easy for a superhero outfit as shamelessly colourful as Superman's (Christopher Reeve) from his 1978 big screen debut to seem laughable by contemporary standards.

However, truly great designs should stand the test of the time, and that's most certainly the case here. It's an elemental superhero aesthetic that perfectly encapsulates the plucky optimism of the movie's tone and, indeed, Reeve's wonderful performance.

Four decades ago, it set the standard for how to translate a comic icon to the cinematic medium, and quite honestly, its verisimilitude has never really been perfected.

That you can watch the movie almost a half-century later without it inspiring laughter from younger audiences is, frankly, a miracle, and a testament to both the timeless suit design and Reeve's unbeatable work filling it out.
