What do you do when you have a beloved cult classic from the late 1980s in your library, just sitting on a shelf collecting dust? You greenlight a remake, of course! At least, that's what Platinum Dunes wanted to do with Fred Dekker's 1987 classic The Monster Squad, which told the story of a group of kids who band together to defend their town from the likes of Dracula, Frankenstein, the Wolf Man, The Gill Man, and The Mummy. However, after hiring writers to tackle the project in 2010, nothing much was heard about the new film. That is, until Collider interviewed Platinum Dunes team Brad Fuller and Andrew Form, who told them:
Form: "The Monster Squad, we're not developing that anymore." Fuller: "That's dead."
Well, that's a pretty definitive answer, wouldn't you agree? As sad as it is to think about the potential that a modern-day Monster Squad could have been... chances are it would have just been another stale, lifeless remake of a beloved property. Plus, with Universal developing that fore-mentioned Monsters shared universe of their own, perhaps Platinum Dunes felt they couldn't compete with the likes of Frankenstein, Dracula, and the Creature from the Black Lagoon at Universal.
