15 Films That Took Major Strides In Animation

Shrek 1
Netflix

Netflix's recent festive feature caught the attention of many pre-release since it was 2D animated, and didn't look like any other in its category. It sought to bring 2D animation into the new era by using computer software and its rendering capabilities. Unlike previous animations to this scale, such as The Princess And The Frog, it had reinvigorated the medium with a sense of wonder and not only nostalgia.

This delightful movie replicated Disney's short Paperman by intriguing the audience with the look of 3D without losing the appeal of 2D characters silhouettes and expression.

What was put into action to achieve this final product is concealed for the most part, but it pursued the line of putting key frames into art rendering software and having the movement be computer generated from that point, with tweaks to correct the easing of each movement.

The steadiness of this system allowed for the animators to work fluidly and allowed them to change the style and lighting to fit a mood or setting instantaneously. Hopefully with Klaus behind us, more traditional 2D animation will soon be rejuvenated and appear in cinemas once more.
