15 Films You Didn't Realise Were Remakes

11. Meet Joe Black

True Lies
Universal

In Meet Joe Black, the embodiment of Death prepares to take the life of a successful mogul called William Parrish. Death agrees to delay Parrish's demise if he agrees to teach him about Earthly life. As he becomes close friends with Parrish, Death falls in love with his daughter, Susan.

Having Death coming to Earth to learn about humanity is such a novel idea, many people were surprised a movie hasn't done it sooner.

But it has. Meet Joe Black is a remake of 1934's Death Takes A Holiday. Although Death comes to Earth out of curiosity in Meet Joe Black, he does so in the original film to learn why humanity fears him.

Even though Meet Joe Black is the most well-known version of this story, it's considered the weaker adaptation. In fact, the director hated one of the edits so much, he disowned the entire project and ordered for his name to be removed from the credits.
