2. Lady Macbeth

Plot: An oppressed housewife in 19th century England descends into madness and vengeance as she begins an affair with a worker on the estate.

Lady Macbeth is not only one of the best British films of the decade but it was possibly the greatest film of 2017. With the exception of a single problematic scene early on, flaws are remarkably difficult to find here.

As a haunting revenge thriller, an exceptionally refined and visually stunning art-house film, a period drama for people who don't like period dramas and, in general, a nearly perfect movie, Lady Macbeth is one of the most powerful and deliriously entertaining movies in recent memory.

It's especially lifted by an outstanding lead performance from the brilliant rising star Florence Pugh, while William Oldroyd's superb directing also hints he has a prosperous career ahead of him.

Unfortunately, like most British indie films, this remains under-seen, has a lower IMDb score than it arguably deserves (6.9 in this case) and received little awards attention. Considering how great Lady Macbeth was, this can only be seen as a terrible injustice. How underrated this has been is enormously unfortunate, but it remains a modern classic nonetheless.
