15 Greatest Spider-Man Movie Moments

8. Hey, Mr Sandman... - Spider-Man 3 (2007)

Spider-Man 3 may have received criticism for its overwhelming number of villains, yet one good side of having several enemies is the variety of always-interesting creation scenes that explain how they got their often bizarre powers. While we've already looked at Venom's birth on this list, let's turn to his partner in crime, the tragic Sandman. Escaped convict Flint Marko - the true killer of Peter Parker's Uncle Ben - runs from the police and accidentally falls into a pit of sand, actually a particle accelerator, that binds his DNA with sand molecules. He is now made of sand, with the ability to change his shape at will. One of the most visually stunning scenes in any Spider-Man film, let alone the best scene in Spider-Man 3 itself, this sets up Sandman as perhaps the most sympathetic of all Spider-Man's enemies. Driven by the need to raise money for his sick daughter, Marko is ruthless but only because he feels he has to achieve his goal. The moment (see above) he reaches for the locket with his daughter's picture in - only for it to fall through his grainy fingers - encapsulates the sadness that being a man made of sand would bring. Aside from the fact that you can be a super-cool super-villain with the power to terrorise New York, of course.
