15 Horror Movies You Probably Didn't Know Were Based On Books

9. Pontypool

Simply calling 2008's zombie flick Pontypool underrated doesn't even come close to covering how unjustly this one flew under most people's radar. It's somehow one of the best of its kind while remaining one-of-a-kind.

Taken from the second book in Tony Burgess's Pontypool trilogy, the movie tells a zombie tale unlike any other. A shock jock and his station manager must survive together within an isolated radio station against a growing horde of those infected by a virus transferred through the English language.

Pontypool is undoubtedly freaky and intense, but where it really excels is in its cleverness. It uses communication, the one thing that is essential to survival in any desperate situation, against its characters. The movie is a linguistic nightmare, taking the idea of how language changes over time to its most terrifying extreme.

Despite being the second entry in a three part series, there doesn't seem to be much connection between the books themselves, allowing for the movie to better stand on its own. It is one of those rare gems of a film whose execution is able to match its brilliantly out-there concept. Give it a watch and a read, you won't be disappointed.
