15 Insufferable Movie Protagonists That Ruined Their Movies
7. Peter Rabbit - Peter Rabbit
The recent Peter Rabbit film was not very good, but it was occasionally funny and was alright on a technical level, meaning it could've been perfectly OK with one simple fix: make Peter Rabbit likable.
This version of Peter Rabbit is a genuinely nasty character. After Mr McGregor (Sam Neill) dies of a heart attack while chasing him, Peter Rabbit celebrates and gloats about how he killed him (even though he wasn't responsible for the death), indicating he might be a complete psychopath.
He then spends most of the film tormenting and bullying McGregor's nephew, Thomas (Domhnall Gleeson), who frankly seems rather anxious and unhappy. A particularly disturbing moment is when the rabbits start pelting Thomas with blackberries, which they know he's allergic to.
Throughout the film, Peter's a cocky, mean-spirited, arrogant and selfish bully. James Corden's vocal performance is perfectly OK and he isn't the issue as many thought he would be; rather, the writing just let him and the entire film down.
As well as this, his extreme jealousy of the budding romance between his human friend Bea (Rose Byrne) and Thomas is pretty creepy. Is he secretly in love with a human?
Beatrix Potter would be horrified.
