15 Memorable Moments From This Year's Oscars

7. Whiplash Beats Boyhood To Win Best Film Editing

While the Best Director and Best Picture fields were contentious right down to the bone, one of the Oscars that Boyhood seemed destined to win was Best Film Editing: to assemble the 12 years of movie footage into a final product that's both seamless and immensely coherent is no easy feat, yet Sandra Adair made it look absolutely effortless in the best possible way. None of the other nominated movies could compete on that level of scope, but in the end, it was Tom Cross' exemplary job editing Whiplash which won out. The win was a considerable shock and netted the movie its third and final Oscar of the night, a mighty achievement for a low-budget indie movie which premiered at last year's Sundance with little hope that it would be on the biggest movie stage of them all a year later.
