Kristen Stewart’s career across the 2010s was fascinating, coming from her being a notorious punching bag for her work in the Twilight series, to gaining a reputation for being one of the most interesting actresses of her generation, to looping back around to more mainstream cinema.
Stewart’s performances in the Olivier Assayas films Clouds of Sils Maria and Personal Shopper are two of the very best turns of the 2010s, and are enough for her to be considered an all time great actress. Thankfully, she seems to have taken her considerable skills back with her to studio films.
Underwater is her first descent into explicit horror, with Stewart’s protagonist being a scientific researcher trapped underwater with the rest of her team and a mysterious creature out to destroy them. She’ll have to survive the dangers of the environment, the violence of the monster out to get them and potentially the inherent destruction of man.
While this is far from the most original concept, Stewart’s inherent magnetism should be enough to ensure this as an entertaining watch and horror films set in the darkest pits of the ocean are usually entertaining. Add to this the generally positive reviews and Underwater seems like it’ll be a success of a late night film.
