5. The Boy Who Harnessed The Wind

Tagline: A boy from Malawi builds a wind turbine after reading about them in a book. Chiwetel Ejiofor's directorial feature debut.
Netflix might be cruelly counted as a lesser platform when it comes to awards consideration (mostly thanks to some outdated rules) but they're already looking like serious contenders when the next lot come around thanks to Chiwetel Ejiofor's directorial debut.
The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind was written by Ejiofor himself, adapted from the book by William Kamkwamba and Bryan Mealer about a 13-year-old who is thrown out of school when his parents cannot afford it and still manages to build a windmill that saves his Malawian village from famine. It's a true story and an important one and it will be great to see whether Ejiofor's acting ability translates into film-making prowess too.
Here’s the official synopsis:
Adapted from the bestselling book by William Kamkwamba and Bryan Mealer, The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind follows 13-year-old William Kamkwamba (newcomer Maxwell Simba) who is thrown out of the school he loves when his family can no longer afford the fees. Sneaking back into the school library, he finds a way, using the bones of the bicycle belonging to his father Trywell (Chiwetel Ejiofor), to build a windmill which then saves his Malawian village from famine. The emotional journey of a father and his exceptional son at its heart, William’s tale captures the incredible determination of a boy whose inquisitive mind overcame every obstacle in his path.
