9. The Neverending Story III
What Everyone Expected: By the time the third Neverending Story movie came out, it truly seemed like the series was going to live up to its name, chugging along with the same ferocity as the absurd The Land Before Time series (which has its 14th entry penciled in for release later this year). What Actually Happened: The movie was widely panned by critics (who took great relish in mocking the irony of its title, given how this dull sequel really felt like it was never going to end) and a total bust at the box office, quickly making a farce out of the series' outlandish promise. What It Should Have Been Called: While the first two movies were partial adaptations of the classic book of the same name, this film was a completely original story which simply had the Neverending Story title tacked on for the sake of marketing. In reality, had Miramax not simply tried to dupe naive audiences, they would've just removed the franchise title and used the sub-title instead: Escape from Fantasia, while altering any references to the source material.
