13. Drunk, Angry Superman

Superman III is an absolute masterpiece, and don't let anybody tell you otherwise. It's also a complete mess, and not a traditionally “good” film by any stretch of the imagination. It's a film which stars Richard Pryor as a bumbling geek who skis down a skyscraper, an evil supercomputer that tries to eat Robert Vaughn, and a drunk, depressed Superman.

Following Richard Donner's iconic first two Superman films, the third instalment is a drastic turn into left-field shenanigans. The main plot involves Donner's tech guy enlisted in creating a synthetic kind of Kryptonite, replacing an unknown ingredient with “tar”. The compromised Kryptonite has a very different effect on the Man Of Steel.

Far from killing him, it instead makes Superman a crotchety alcoholic who drinks in the day, yells at people, boasts a five o'clock shadow and a slightly darkened costume, tries it on with Lana Lang and is generally adverse to doing anything superheroic. It's hilarious, but it's also a really stupid direction to take the series.
