15 Most Inappropriate Comic Book Movie Storylines Of All Time
9. The Pretending-To-Be-Gay Trick In Kick-Ass
Kick-Ass's whole conceit is providing new, “realistic” twists on existing genre tropes. David's attempts to become a masked vigilante, inspired by his superhero comic books, mostly just results in him getting hospitalised. Nicolas Cage's Batman analogue is a dangerous psychotic who endangers a kid – and nobody thinks that it's cool.
Still, despite undercutting a lot of nerdy wish-fulfilment stereotypes, it also indulges in a couple that are really just insulting. Worst amongst them is the case of mistaken identity with love interest x, who starts hanging around with nerdy David a) because she feels bad for him for getting beaten up, and b) because she thinks he's gay.
And because she thinks he's gay, she assumes there's no chance of him fancying her! So he can apply her fake tan and not care that she's topless! Eventually it works out when he admits he's totally hetero, and they hook up, but urgh. FYI, that is definitely not a viable form of flirting, and you absolutely shouldn't include it in your screenplay. It's creepy.
