6. American Splendor

American Splendor was created by Harvey Pekar in 1976. The series is made up of several autobiographical stories illustrated by several artists over the years, perhaps most notably Robert Crumb. Originally self-published by Pekar, the series was eventually acquired by Dark Horse as well as DC.

In 2003, New Line Cinema released its film version. Unique because of the basis for the original comics, the film serves as both a sort of adaptation and also as a biopic telling the story of how the comics came to be. Not surprisingly, the movie did not exactly light up the box office, but it did do exceedingly well critically.

Ultimately, it received an Academy Award nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay. The category would be one of slew for that year to be won by The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King, another New Line production.

I like to think I'm a clever person, but apparently I'm not clever enough to come up with a witty biography.
