10. Willie Scott (Kate Capshaw) - Indiana Jones & The Temple Of Doom
The Character: A Shanghai nightclub singer who gets caught up in Indy's (Harrison Ford) adventure, a prim and proper woman who near-constantly bemoans the sticky situations Indy gets her into. Why She's Offensive: For one, she's an extremely annoying damsel-in-distress character who, while a clear homage to the equivalent in 1930s adventure serials, isn't exactly a leading lady with much of her own agency. She spends most of the film shrieking and whining while Indy gets her in and out of scrapes and of course, by the end of the movie, she's fallen for his irresistible charm. In addition, she doesn't really have much chemistry with Ford, and when a good chunk of the audience is actually rooting for the bad guy to rip her heart out, you know something's gone wrong. Plus, there's the unavoidable feeling that Capshaw, who is now director Steven Spielberg's wife, only ended up in the film because he wanted her. Does She Ruin The Movie?: It's a testament to how fun the movie otherwise is that her bleating presence can't ruin it, though had Spielberg gone with one of the other 120 actresses who auditioned (namely Sharon Stone), then Temple may have been a smoother ride.
Stay at home dad who spends as much time teaching his kids the merits of Martin Scorsese as possible (against the missus' wishes).
