Happy Death Day 2U, despite some rather entertaining trailers, was a massive disappointment and a hugely irritating misfire, yet for some bizarre reason reviewers mostly let it off.

It does have another great leading performance from Jessica Rothe and it's perfectly watchable, but the film is unfortunately a complete mess that gets completely bogged down in sentimental, treacly subplots and over-stretched jokes, while the film's dull multi-verse story-line and its decision to pretty much repeat the first movie certainly don't help matters.

Meanwhile, the film's horror elements and the masked killer fade into irrelevance, making this is a horror film with a fatal lack of actual horror.

On the whole, it's baffling that reviews were mostly positive; mixed-to-negative reviews would've reflected the film's quality far more. A third film isn't currently planned due to the lower-than-expected box office returns and after this let-down it's hard to care.
