Lists like this are by nature controversial but thankfully, the number one pick here won't cause too much of a stir. Obviously, some people loved I'm Thinking of Ending Things, a surrealist drama and Charlie Kaufman's third directional venture but plenty didn't get into it and it's really, really not hard to see why. Despite strong acting and visuals, it's near-impossible to get through.

If anyone ever asked what 'Pretentious' means, just show them I'm Thinking of Ending Things, for this movie sums it up better than a dictionary ever could. It's a cold, emotionally distant compilation of surrealism and abstract metaphors that is so generalized and confusing that it never really says anything at all.

Mind-blowingly arrogant, excruciatingly dull and far more shallow than it realizes, Thinking really is among the most nauseating films in recent memory. With this one, the real mystery is not what its dense, abstract final act meant. No, the real mystery is: how the hell did this one get such strong reviews from critics?

By far and away, this is the most overrated film of the 2020s so far and honestly, it's really recommended that you don't bother with this one. Not unless you need a cure for insomnia, anyway.

An Underrated Alternative: Ad Astra (2019) - James Gray's magnificent sci-fi drama, which explores some deep themes but actually remembers to be, you know, entertaining is possibly the most underrated film of the last few years.
