15 Most Overrated Movies Of The Decade (So Far)
7. Gravity

Gravity looks amazing. The CGI is nothing short of incredible (and only made more jaw-dropping when you discover how it was filmed), 3D is for once almost justified and Emmanuel Lubezki's long shots are as beautiful as they are meticulous. It's a visual and technical triumph that provides a cool cinema experience.
And... that's it. Go beyond that outer sheen and Gravity has a poorly written, thematically obvious script, under-developed characters and so much overt symbolism it's a wonder they didn't call it Rebirth.
This is the cinematic equivalent of a theme-park ride, the high-end cousin to T2 3-D: Battle Across Time and can be plenty exhilarating on that level. Of course, that isn't much of an issue. Or rather, it wouldn't be if everyone hadn't proclaimed it as some all-round masterpiece, with across-the-board five-star appraisals leading to it being a front-runner at the Oscars, winning everything aside from Best Picture (and Actress, but that was always an outside shot).
Go back and rewatch it outside of the effects of the hype-machine and knowing full-well how the plot's going to play out and much of the suspense is gone, leaving a fun-but-flawed movie.
