10 Cloverfield Lane was a real surprise in 2016, being a sort-of sequel that was better than the original, and for seemingly popping out of nowhere. It’s a taut thriller that makes great use of its simple premise, and the three principal cast members each do great work.

The plot has two people seeking shelter in the bunker of John Goodman’s survivalist after a possible alien apocalypse, but when they discover Howard might be lying, they decide to fashion a survival suit and escape. Howard soon realises what they’re up to, and tries to force them to confess. Emmett takes the blame, leading to Howard shooting him in the head without warning.

It’s a real turning point for the film, and removes any shred of doubt that Howard is the monster they both suspected he was.
