15 Most Terrifying Horror Film Moments Of The Decade (So Far)
8. The Screech (The Woman In Black)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pNaebWfx5cwThe Woman In Black is an old school ghost story, and though many of its scares are a familiar, they still get the job done. The whole thing works because of Daniel Radcliffe's dedication, the set design, and of course the woman herself, a bone-chilling modern horror villain.
Take this moment in which Arthur hears something down the hallway and watches as it grows darker and darker. What's happening? Is the woman approaching? He backs up trying to figure out what to do, when suddenly a candle blows out. He looks down, and from the corner of the room, the woman looks up, lets out an ear-piercing screech, and rushes straight towards him.
Like the Mama scene, just the image of someone darting straight ahead with such purpose is scary as hell, but the misdirection is also what makes this scene so effective. Your attention is drawn to the hallway, and in fact so many movies have a scene where the villain would be approaching from down there. It's all just a distraction, though, because the woman has been with him the entire time. The film asks you to imagine thinking you're safe somewhere when actually, something horrifying has been lurking in the corner all along.
