1. Hardcore Henry

In Ilya Naishuller’s feature length debut Hardcore Henry, a cybernetically resurrected man must save his kidnapped scientist wife from a telekinetic Russian warlord. While that might sound like a typical plot from a run of the mill action flick, it’s the movie’s ground-breaking filming style that sets it apart from other films. Inspired by first-person shooter games and shot entirely from its titular characters point of view, Hardcore Henry is definitely an acquired taste. Though it gained a good few fans who enjoyed the uber-violent, adrenaline-filled ride and praised its creative approach to cinematography, the film also got a lot of flak for its motion sickness-inducing camerawork and almost constant bloodshed from critics who punished it with some rather middling reviews.

But to dismiss the movie based on its violence and frenetic pace is to not take into account the fact that its source material is also violent and frenetic, and not to mention a lot of fun. While it’s definitely not a film that will appeal to every moviegoer, it deserves credit for its sheer innovation.
