3. Red Rock West
Another noir-western mash-up, although this one is more neo-noir than classic Bogart style detective story.
Directed by The Last Seduction helmer John Dahl, this
1993 flick sees Nic Cage play an aimless drifter who is snookered into an elaborate
plot between Dennis Hopper’s wild eyed hitman and Lara Flynn Boyle’s sexpot
femme fatale.
As is the custom in this sort of flick, all sort of money-stealing town-skipping double-crossing shenanigans soon ensue, and the film soon turns into a suspenseful and intense thriller which eventually culminates in a dramatically lit graveyard shoot-em-up which we’re almost certain inspired the ending of Martin McDonagh’s 2012 hit Seven Psychopaths (also absurdly underrated, but not quite western enough for this list).
