2. The Three Burials Of Melquiades Estrada

The Proposition
Europacorp

A dark and difficult flick from the writer of 21 Grams, this is nonetheless a necessary watch for fans of the genre.

Set in contemporary America, the film follows Tommy Lee Jones’ gruff sort-of-hero as he drags Barry Pepper’s uncaring border patrol agent across state lines to give a Christian burial to the undocumented worker Pepper's character accidentally killed.

That’s about it in terms of plot, with much of this film’s meditative action consisting of conversations between Jones, Pepper, and the decaying body of the eponymous Melquiades Estrada. Despite this apparent limitation, what ensues is a stoic but thoughtful dissection of identity as the men face what it means to be an American citizen and a Christian in an increasingly impersonal era.
