15 Most Unexpectedly Depressing Movies Of All-Time
2. My Girl (1991)
For most people, the words "My Girl" conjure up thoughts of one of two things: either it's the classic Temptations song from the 1960s, or it's the uneasily depressing "comedy" film from 1991 that is near-on unbearable to think about. Seriously, did we need a movie like this? Did we really need a movie that unexpectedly throws in a late-stage child death? Apparently we did. My Girl, starring Macaulay Culkin and Anna Chlumsky, then, tells the seemingly cute story of a childhood friendship between a tomboy named Vada Sultenfuss and her best buddy Thomas J. Sennett. It's all innocent and adorable... until it's not. Which is to say, My Girl goes from enjoyable to horrific in the space of a few scenes, after Thomas (Culkin at his outright cutest) dies. Like, actually dies. Allergic to everything, he ends up getting stung by hornets - God, who wrote this? - and perishes. So Vada has to come to terms with this, of course. In the most heartbreaking scene (ever?), she stands over his body at the funeral and - in tears - desperately tries to put his glasses back on. The word "traumatic" is an understatement.
