15 Radical Superheroes To Diversify The MCU
9. Angela
There are few comics characters with as tangled a past as Angela, both in-universe and out. Originally an Image character - Heaven’s bounty hunter - created by Neil Gaiman and Todd McFarlane, a legal dispute rendered Gaiman sole owner of the character, which he then sold to Marvel.
Marvel introduced Angela into their continuity by retconning her origin: she wasn’t an angelic warrior, as she’d thought, but the missing daughter of Odin - Thor and Loki’s sister.
As strong as one brother and as ruthless as the other, with an angel’s inflexible code of debt and barter, Angela is a fascinating, kick-ass female character with a lot of potential were she to be adapted to the MCU.
However, she’s also gay: the comics see her in a monogamous relationship with a former Anchorite angel, Sera. Where angelic warriors are winged and female, Anchorite monks are wingless and male; Sera finds a way to transition to female.
The MCU’s Valkyrie was, apparently, intended to be bisexual, but her single appearance to date shed no light on her sexuality. Adapting Angela for the MCU could potentially allow for another awesomely powerful female character identifying as lesbian, and potentially her transwoman lover.
That kind of representation would be an unprecedented, radical step forward for queer popular culture.
