15 Terrible Mistakes That Almost Ruined James Bond For Everyone

11. Bond Wears "Yellow Face" (You Only Live Twice)

Because setting a Bond film in Japan just wasn't enough, You Only Live Twice featured a significant plot point in which Bond had to "become Japanese", resulting in him being given eye-pieces, a black-haired wig, a shaved chest and then having his skin dyed. When Bond then shows up in Aki's bedroom, kitted out in a kimono and resembling some bizarre Frankenstein experiment, it's astounding that his famed animal magnetism still has its usual effect. It's a wildly undignified farce for all uninvolved: Connery looks patently ridiculous and has to spend the whole time squinting, while on its own terms it's hugely racially insensitive, even for the 1960s, where Mickey Rooney had already cornered the market on offending the Japanese with his embarrassing I.Y. Yunioshi character in Breakfast at Tiffanys. Thankfully, at least, it's the sort of politically incorrect relic fans won't ever have to deal with in contemporary Bond flicks.
