15 Terrible Recent Movies Destined To Become Cult Classics
14. Only God Forgives
Rotten Tomatoes Score: 40% Why It Sucks: Nicolas Winding Refn's Ryan Gosling-starring crime thriller turned out to be arguably the most disappointing film of 2013, a wildly underwhelming effort that, though plenty stylish, just lacked much content to speak of: most of the movie is Gosling looking pretty and staring into the middle-distance for minutes at a time. Even many of those who loved Refn's previous films had to concede that there just wasn't much there. Why It'll Become A Cult Classic: For starters, there are those who simply love everything Refn makes, and find his insistently drawn-out, slow-paced style "artful". Then there's those who love the film's sheer weirdness, namely the bizarre sexual themes and the curious Oedipal imagery relating to Julian (Gosling) and his mother Crystal (Kristin Scott Thomas), as well as the undeniably gorgeous visuals and superb score from Cliff Martinez. Generally, the people who love this film acknowledge its pretentiousness and cite that as a reason for enjoying it, because for all of its many flaws, there's absolutely nothing like it out there.
Stay at home dad who spends as much time teaching his kids the merits of Martin Scorsese as possible (against the missus' wishes).
