A homeless cat. A newborn. The Pope. What do they have in common? They all know who Batman is. Literally, everyone knows the Caped Crusader, so this puts pressure on actors tasked with playing Batman on the big screen. After George Clooney phoned in the worst comic book performance since Howard the Duck quacked onto set, Christian Bale must have felt a lot of pressure to make the role of Batman his own. Presumably while doing his research, Bale discovered that no Batman to date had shouted and growled like an enraged homeless man on smack, so that's the path he chose. Admittedly, Nolan's interpretation of the Dark Knight called for a more menacing take on the character, but no one could have predicted quite how angry Bale's version would be. The scene in Batman Begins where the caped crusader interrogates a criminal on a rooftop should have been terrifying to watch. After all, intimidation is one of Batman's key traits, but the whole exchange feels more like a SNL skit where Bale's American Psycho goes out for a jolly on Halloween. If Bale ever returns to the role, may we suggest that Kevin Conroy dubs his speaking voice to spare us all more unintentional hilarity.
