15 Things Horror Remakes Did Better Than The Original
8. Friday The 13th - The Set-Pieces
The 2009 Friday the 13th remake is a very solid and entertaining effort overall that gets ripped on for no clear reason. Yes, it's very derivative of the earlier films but that doesn't make it bad.
This ultra-loose remake of Friday the 13th (1980), which also has elements of the first three Friday the 13th sequels, actually provides a welcome update on the original since it does the violence, pacing and intensity a hell of a lot better.
Friday the 13th (2009) isn't scary, but this has always been a franchise which offered intensity over scares anyhow and this is a highly brutal, thrilling and punchy horror film that is, all things considered, superior to the original film.
The original film is a solid slasher film but it's ageing awkwardly and feels rather tame with its set-pieces, while it's also let down by uneven pacing. This remake fixes both of those issues but also avoids simply redoing the story of the original film, allowing it to stand as arguably the second-best film (after 1981's Friday the 13th Part 2) in this now forty-year-old franchise.
