Although Miyazaki could be held responsible for the confusing feelings felt by many fans through means of this cartoon Don Juan, it was actually British writer Dianne Wynne Jones who originally wrote the story of the wizard who ate young women's hearts. Howl was the love interest of Sophie Hatter in the novel of the same name, and was equally as charming and charismatic in the book as he was in Miyazakis stunning portrayal. It may seem slightly unorthodox to say that most fans have had a crush on Howl at one point, but the fact of the matter is that he was meant to be lusted after, two dimensional or not. The entire premise of his character is that he lures women back to his moving castle and eats their hearts. Hes beautiful and charming, and those Studio Ghibli fans who watched the dubbed version cant be blamed for their feelings. They had no choice against Christian Bale and his raspy, alluring voice.
