15 Worst Performances In Star Wars Movies

11. Silas Carson - Nute Gunray

Silas Carson played two roles in the prequel trilogy. One was Jedi master Ki-Andi Mundi and while this was only a small part, he did a rock-solid job with it.

The other was as Nute Gunray, an evil alien businessman and a crappy villain who was one of the main antagonists of The Phantom Menace. Even though he'd invaded a planet, he somehow wasn't put in jail and returned in the next two films before Anakin finally shut him up in Revenge of the Sith. This was a far weaker part for Carson and although the terrible writing didn't help, this performance still felt pretty off.

Not only is there no menace or nuance in this performance, but for some reason Carson decided to play the character with a Thai accent. This, coupled with Gunray's Asian-like robes and status as an evil businessman, made Gunray (much like both Watto and Jar Jar Binks) seem like a racial stereotype. Looking back on it twenty years later, The Phantom Menace actually feels pretty racist at times and thanks to this, as well as the dated-looking visuals, the film is ageing rather awkwardly.
