16 Intriguing Indie Films To Watch Out For In Spring 2014

8. The Immigrant

Plot: Set in the 1920s, Polish immigrant Ewa befriends a deceitfully charming man named Bruno who eventually forces Ewa into prostitution. The Immigrant stars Joaquin Phoenix, Marion Cotillard, and Jeremy Renner and was directed by the absurdly underrated James Gray (We Own The Night, Two Lovers) whose only fault is that his films are more deliberately paced than your average Hollywood movie. The film is loosely based on the experiences James Gray's grandparents had when they were immigrants in New York City. It had a mixed reaction at last year's Cannes Film Festival, but was well-received when it premiered at the New York Film Festival last October. It even made a few critics' top 10 of the year lists despite not being officially released in the US yet. As of right now, the film's set to come out in April, though there is still no specific date set. US release date: April 2014
