17 Superhero Movies That Were Nominated For Oscars
7. Batman Returns
Nominated For: Best Makeup & Best Visual Effects
Not that you'd expect a Tim Burton Batman movie to be nominated for Best Screenplay, but this is a cleverer, more creative film than the original that has fun following its eccentric characters. It juggles its multiple strands with considerably more aplomb than Batman & Robin, which often felt like some campy ideas shuffled together into a more or less coherent narrative.
The only awards the movie actually won were a BFI Award for Danny Elfman's score and an Academy Of Science Fiction, Fantasy And Horror Films USA award for Stan Winston's makeup. That makes you question how anyone could ignore the acting in a movie where Danny DeVito plays The Penguin, Michelle Pfeiffer is Catwoman and Christopher Walken plays "Max Shreck."
To be fair, DeVito wasn't completely ignored - he received a Worst Supporting Actor nomination from the Razzies, making you wonder what other movies they'd been watching.
