4. Beasts Of No Nation - Idris Elba

Rotten Tomatoes score: 91% There are some things that are extremely alien to some people and all too real and familiar to others. The thought of a child being forced to abandon their innocence and commit violent atrocities in the name of an adult€™s political agenda or desire for power is one of those extreme notions. Which is what makes a movie like Beasts Of No Nation equally important, terrifying and bittersweet. BONN depicts the story of young Agu, a boy in West Africa who is adopted into a rising rebel faction when the government murders his father, assuming that he was part of the rebellion. Agu is taken under the wing of the Commandant, played by the always terrific Elba, and is soon suffocating under the death and destruction that follows the Commandant wherever he goes. The film is available on Netflix right now and is entirely worth a watch, even if only once. It is uncompromising and unflinching, yet also offers a sliver of hope. A sliver that is about as reassuring as a splinter under your thumbnail, but it€™s there. I would say that if you like Idris Elba then this film is a no-brainer, although you may end up hating the actor afterwards - he€™s so damn good at being bad. You should see this if: you are okay with seeing children be forcibly stripped of their innocence and want to marvel at the composure of the director and extremely talented actors who tackle a harrowing notion.
