20 Actors Who Just Gave Their Best Performance Ever

13. Paul Rudd - Friendship

Life of Chuck Mark Hamill
A24

Black comedy Friendship is one of the strangest, most fascinating releases of the year, and while star Tom Robinson gives a distinctly on-brand I Think You Should Leave-flavoured performance as our socially awkward protagonist Craig, it's Paul Rudd who gives a turn quite unlike anything he's ever done before.

Rudd has of course received consistent plaudits for both his comedic and dramatic work, his most lauded performances being in TV show Living with Yourself and films I Love You Man, Role Models, and This Is 40.

But as meteorologist Austin in Friendship, Rudd gets to give a performance that manages to both support and subvert his tendency to play cool, chilled-out guys you'd love to grab a beer with.

The superficial charm is all there, but once Austin begins to realise just how unsettlingly weird his new friend Craig actually is, he shifts into an altogether more standoffish mode.

The result is a more complex and multi-faceted character than Rudd has had the opportunity to play much prior, and though certainly not a big performance, it's more impressively restrained than few would've ever anticipated from him.
