Early in his life, Mahershala Ali was a very talented basketball player, attending Saint Mary's College of California on a scholarship for it. He later changed his focus to acting and would appear in series such as The 4400 and House of Cards. His most notable movie appearance was likely in the adaptation of The Curious Case of Benjamin Button.

He became known to wider audience as Boggs, a rebel soldier and ally of Katniss Everdeen in both Mockingjay parts. Since then, his projects have included the Netfilx series Luke Cage and the film Moonlight, for which he received an Academy Award.
